Hot Tub Site Prep Checklist: Pad, Electrical, Access & Placement (What to Know Before You Buy)

Adding a hot tub is one of those home upgrades you’ll feel every day: better recovery, better sleep, more time outside, and a dedicated space to unplug. But before you pick a model, most homeowners ask the same practical question:

“What do I need at my house before the hot tub arrives?”

Use this checklist to plan your hot tub project like a pro, so delivery day goes smoothly and your new spa is set up for long-term enjoyment.

1) Start with the foundation: what should a hot tub sit on?

A hot tub needs a solid, level base that can support the spa when it’s filled with water and people. If the base isn’t stable and level, you can run into issues down the road (from shifting to unnecessary stress on the spa).

Most common options include:

  • Concrete pad (a popular, long-lasting choice)
  • Reinforced deck (only if the structure is designed to handle the load)
  • Pavers or patio surfaces (can work if properly prepared and level)

If you’re unsure what’s best for your yard, don’t guess: this is one of the biggest “wish we’d done it differently” areas for new owners.

Montana Hot Spring Spas can help you plan the right foundation so your spa has the support it needs.

2) Deck hot tub question: can my deck support a hot tub?

This is one of the most searched questions for a reason.

A filled hot tub is extremely heavy, and a deck needs to be specifically engineered to support that kind of load safely. If you’re considering a deck install (or an inset “built-in” look), the safest path is to talk with a qualified contractor or structural professional about reinforcement.

Pro tip: Even if the deck seems sturdy, that doesn’t mean it’s rated for a filled spa.

3) Electrical requirements: plan this early (seriously)

Electrical is usually the #1 “schedule bottleneck” in hot tub installations. The right setup depends on the spa model and your home’s existing panel capacity.

A few electrical planning basics:

  • Many spas require a dedicated circuit
  • Most installs require GFCI protection
  • You’ll likely need a licensed electrician
  • Some areas require electrical permits/inspection

Good news: you don’t have to figure this out alone. We specifically help customers with cement pad and electrical planning as part of the purchase-to-install experience.

4) Access: can the hot tub actually get into your backyard?

This is the part homeowners forget…. until delivery day.

Before you choose a spa (or finalize the install location), think about:

  • Gate width
  • Fence lines
  • Steps, slopes, or tight turns
  • Landscaping obstacles
  • Overhangs, rooflines, and eaves

A great install location isn’t just where the spa will live; it’s also where the spa can reach safely during delivery.

(We offer delivery and installation, so we can help you think through access early and avoid surprises!)

5) Placement tips: where should a hot tub go?

The “best spot” is different for every home, but these placement considerations come up again and again:

  • Privacy: Will you actually use it if you feel exposed?
  • Wind: A windy corner can cool you down fast in winter.
  • Drainage: Avoid low spots where water pools.
  • Convenience: The closer it is to the house, the more often people use it.
  • Service clearance: Leave enough room around the spa for future maintenance.

If you’re planning a full backyard upgrade, it’s worth thinking about the hot tub as the anchor of the space…. then designing lighting, paths, and seating around it.

6) Plan for ownership: water care support matters

The install is only step one. The best hot tub experiences happen when water care feels simple and manageable.

Montana Hot Spring Spas includes user education and water care training, so you feel confident maintaining your spa (not stressed by it). They also offer repair services through qualified service personnel and can provide warranty packages as an authorized dealer/service provider.

Quick hot tub pre-install checklist (save this!)

Before your spa arrives, confirm:

  • A level, load-bearing foundation is ready
  • Your electrical plan is scheduled (and permitted if required)
  • A clear delivery path is confirmed
  • The spa location has privacy, drainage, and service access
  • You have a plan for water care (and training scheduled)
