Salt Water Hot Tubs: Busting the Myths (And Why So Many People Are Making the Switch)

If you’ve been curious about salt water hot tubs, but a little hesitant? You’re not alone. There’s a lot of misinformation out there. Let’s clear it up.

You’ve probably heard things. “Salt water hot tubs are like soaking in the ocean.” “The salt will destroy the equipment.” “It’s just a gimmick.” We hear these concerns from customers all the time and we get it. When you’re making a significant investment in a hot tub for your home, you want real answers, not marketing spin.

So let’s talk straight about salt water systems: what they actually are, what they aren’t, and why so many hot tub owners who make the switch wonder why they ever used anything else.

Myth #1: “Salt water hot tubs are like swimming in the ocean.”

This is probably the most common misconception , and it stops a lot of people before they even consider the option.

The ocean contains roughly 35,000 parts per million (ppm) of salt. A salt water hot tub? Around 1,500–2,000 ppm. That’s less than your own tears. You won’t taste it. You won’t feel gritty afterward. You won’t feel like you need a shower to wash the salt off.

What you will feel is water that many people describe as silkier, softer, and gentler on skin and eyes. The difference in sensation compared to traditionally chlorinated water is noticeable and for most people, it’s a big part of why they love it.

The reality: Salt water hot tubs use a very low concentration of salt far lower than a pool, and dramatically lower than the ocean. Most people can’t taste or smell any difference from the outside of the tub.

Myth #2: “Salt will corrode my hot tub and damage my equipment.”

This concern often comes from people who’ve heard about saltwater pool corrosion issues and it’s a fair concern to raise. But hot tub salt systems are designed and engineered specifically for this environment, with salt-tolerant components that pool equipment doesn’t always have.

Quality salt water systems designed for hot tubs (like the Fresh Water Salt System available on select Hot Spring Spas models) are built with corrosion-resistant materials. When used and maintained correctly, they’re not hard on your equipment. In fact, because salt systems generate

chlorine more consistently and at lower peak levels than manual dosing, they can actually be gentler on certain components over time.

The key phrase: “used and maintained correctly.” Like any water care system, proper maintenance matters. Salt levels need to be monitored. pH and alkalinity still need to be balanced. That’s true whether you’re using a salt system, traditional chlorine, or any other water care approach.

The reality: Salt water systems designed for hot tubs use salt levels low enough that corrosion isn’t a significant concern when the system is properly maintained. Many of today’s hot tubs are engineered with salt systems in mind from the ground up.

Myth #3: “Salt water hot tubs are maintenance-free.”

Let’s flip the coin here because this myth goes the other direction. Some people assume a salt system means zero maintenance. That’s not accurate either, and we’d rather be upfront about it.

Salt water systems automate the chlorine generation process, which is a meaningful convenience. Instead of manually adding chlorine regularly, the salt cell produces it continuously and consistently. That’s a real benefit. But you still need to:

  • Monitor and balance pH and alkalinity
  • Check salt levels and top off as needed
  • Periodically clean the salt cell
  • Replace the salt cell cartridge (typically every 1–4 years, depending on the system)

The workload is genuinely reduced compared to traditional chemical dosing but “less maintenance” isn’t the same as “no maintenance.”

The reality: Salt water systems significantly simplify your water care routine, but they don’t eliminate it. Think of it as reducing your to-do list, not erasing it.

Myth #4: “Salt water means no chlorine so it’s Better for Sensitive Skin”

This one is half-true, and the distinction matters. Salt water hot tubs do produce chlorine; that’s actually how they sanitize the water. A device called a salt cell converts dissolved salt into chlorine through electrolysis.

So it’s not “chlorine-free.” What it is, is differently chlorinated and that distinction is meaningful for many people.

The chlorine produced by a salt system tends to be more consistent and lower in concentration at any given moment than manually dosed chlorine. There are also fewer chloramines, the

byproduct of chlorine reacting with organic matter that causes the strong “chemical” smell and can irritate eyes and skin.

For people with sensitive skin, allergies, or who simply find traditionally treated water irritating, salt water systems often provide a noticeably better experience. But if you have a genuine chlorine sensitivity, it’s worth discussing with a healthcare provider as you’re still soaking in chlorinated water.

The reality: Salt water hot tubs generate chlorine naturally and continuously. The experience is often gentler on skin and less “chemical” smelling, but it’s not a chlorine-free environment.

Myth #5: “Any hot tub can just be converted to salt water.”

Not quite. While some salt water conversion kits exist, salt water systems work best and most safely on hot tubs that were designed and engineered to accommodate them.

Hot Spring Spas with the Fresh Water Salt System are built from the ground up with this in mind: salt-compatible plumbing, appropriate component materials, and a system calibrated for the size and flow of your specific spa. Trying to retrofit a salt system onto a hot tub that wasn’t designed for it can lead to premature wear on gaskets, jets, and other components.

If salt water is important to you (and for many people it becomes a top priority once they experience it) the right move is to choose a hot tub that’s purpose-built for it, and to experience that water quality in person before you buy.

The reality: Salt water systems perform best on hot tubs designed for them. If this is a feature you want, look for models where it’s part of the original engineering not an afterthought.
